Bouts Cottage Nurseries
We are often asked why we specialise in violas. It certainly wasn't our intention when Bouts Cottage Nurseries was formed in 1978. We started with herbs and terracotta pots, though it was always our aim to be purely plant growers.

The sheer physical effort required to move the pots from show to show only provided further incentive to achieve this ambition. So it was that one year on, we began to grow universal pansies, which proved to be very popular. A chance encounter with a viola enthusiast led to an exchange of several pansies for a viola; 'Maggie Mott'. It was this plant that sparked our lifelong passion, leading to a viola collection that now exceeds 140 varieties.

We exhibit at many horticultural shows as well as other events around the country. We continue to send plants out by mail order. Further details can be found in this website or at the back of our catalogue both of which have been recently revamped.

Finally, to all our friends and much valued customers who have encouraged and supported us over the years we would like to say a big thank you.

Violas and Violettas
Violas are hardy perennial plants, easily grown and maintained, with a long flowering season- from late March through to October. The majority of violas are scented. All our plants have been grown from cuttings. Once rooted they are grown on in 9cm (3") pots and are not despatched until they are large enough to be planted out.

Violas and Pansies
We are frequently asked "What is the real difference between a viola and a pansy?" A true pansy has a pansy face and has been bred largely from voila tricolour- the native wild pansy from which it derives its annual, single stemmed, straggling nature. Violas on the other hand have been bred from a mixture of viola lutea and viola cornuta which gives them a dwarf, compact habit and they flower freely from March to October. Most violas will rarely come true from seed- those that do are identified in the catalogue.
